This blog will be a record of the students and my attempts to explore Islay and Jura in as many ways as possible
Nope this is not going to be a long post about geography and the Curriculum for Excellence, having read Standish I understand that I may be considerably better off here in Scotland and, although, I relish a good fight this is not one that I have to be directly involved in.
This is an attempt to work out how to assess pupils. There are as yet very few, if any examples of assessed geography work on the NAR and as a one person department isolated but for the wonders of Twitter I have to rely, until someone tells me different on assessment being at least consistent across S1 and S2. I also need to know that it shows progression, that it can be easily understood by students and parents with next steps being clear for all to see.
When I started last year I had the experiences and outcomes on one sheet of paper for students to place in their books - this was a short term measure but was by no means satisfactory it was unwieldy did not relate directly to what students were doing and it was hard for them to see progression.
So far it’s a work in progress - I will post a scheme of work that has had these assessment sheets incorporated into it later in the week (it will be trialled after half term). I still need to go through and match up CforE outcomes to the statements and I need to add in details regarding where these are covered in my own curriculum (these being for my records)
The second set of sheets posted here can be adapted for students to log their own progress when they are completing a piece of work, for self assessment at the end of a piece of work or for peer assessment. I see these as being adapted depending upon the content that students are studying.
Anyone who wants to help me make them less wordy, or has any ideas about they can be improved feel free to comment!
Lastly inspiration and better descriptions in particular are based on work done for the Staffordshire Learning Net, and by Chris Durban
