This blog will be a record of the students and my attempts to explore Islay and Jura in as many ways as possible
I always have my doubts about the value of home work, it often is the bane of my existence – both the coming up with ideas, ensuring it has value and then cajoling, threatening and pleading with students to get it in. As a result I tend to set students home works that span long time periods, involve some imagination and research by students and will hopefully inspire the unwilling and non compliant to hand something of value in.
With all this in mind i was thrilled that the fantastic people at mission explore came up with some missions that I could print off hand out to students and challenge them to produce their best. We decided to start with the map challenge and the completed works are starting to drift in (delayed by students missing due to the Mod). I cannot recommend these enough as a way of getting even the most reluctant to try something! So well done to Neil and Eleanor you are the first to feature.. Comments would be appreciated.
Way back in the summer I started to look at a new scheme of work for S2. The new National 4 and 5 qualifications will cover some of the topics that I currently cover in S2 and since they will be studying for these in S3 it makes sense to look at alternatives that build on S1 without leading to a repeat in S3. In S1 we look at extreme environments – rather than trying to cover too much in a short period of time we focus on Mountains (based in some part on the work in the GCSE OCR text book http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0199135207/ref=oss_product ). In that topic we look briefly at some of the problems faced in The Andes as a result of Climate Change and Rural Urban Migration. I wanted to look in more detail in at the future of Cities and at another climate Change reality (allowing them to reflect and compare with what was learnt in S1) as well as allowing students to progress in their ability to successfully problem solve, explain and undertake enquiry.
